Day 15: Build Back Better
President Joe Biden spoke to the State Department today, in his first speech addressing foreign policy since he took office.
“America is back,” he said. “Diplomacy is back at the center of foreign policy… we will repair our alliances and engage the world once again, not to meet yesterday’s challenges, but today’s and tomorrow’s.”
The pandemic, climate crisis and nuclear proliferation were among the challenges he cited. He says the United States intends to approach them rooted in our “most cherished democratic values: defending freedom, championing opportunity, upholding universal rights, respecting the rule of law, and treating every person with dignity.”
Recently sworn in Secretary Antony Blinken introduced him and emphasized that our foreign policy is domestic policy.
Noted Biden, while speaking of China’s economy and globalized governance, “We will compete from a position of strength by building back better at home, working with our allies and partners, renewing our role in international institutions, and reclaiming our credibility and moral authority.”
Rejoining the Paris Accord (a climate agreement signed by nearly 200 nations) was a Day 1 move for him.
“This Administration is going to empower you to do your jobs,” he said, “not target or politicize you. We want a rigorous debate that brings all perspectives and makes room for dissent. That’s how we’ll get the best policy outcomes. So with your help, the United States will again lead not just by the example of our power but the power of our example.”
