Day 72: A Moment of Silence
United States Capitol Police Officer William Evans has died. He was on duty at the Capitol Campus, when a man who at this time seems to have been acting alone, allegedly crashed his car into the barricades at a security checkpoint and engaged two USCP officers with a knife.
Evans, who served with the USCP for 18 years, was struck by the car. The suspect was shot and later pronounced dead, too.
“I just ask that the public continue to keep U.S. Capitol Police and their families in your prayers. This has been an extremely difficult time for U.S. Capitol Police, after the events of January 6th and now the events that have occurred here today,” said USCP Acting Chief Yogananda Pittman.
The second officer who was injured was transported to the hospital.
“Jill and I were heartbroken to learn of the violent attack,” President Joe Biden said. He ordered flags on all federal properties to be flown at half-staff until sunset April, 6th.
