Washington, D.C. has suffered 1,000 Covid-19-related deaths as of today, claiming Mercia Bowser, sister of Mayor Muriel Bowser, this morning.

“Mercia was loved immensely and will be missed greatly,” Mayor Bowser wrote via Twitter, “as she joins the legion of angels who have gone home too soon due to the pandemic.

“Mercia was a loving daughter, sister, aunt, and friend. She worked tirelessly for children, the elderly, and those with behavioral disorders until her retirement and beyond.” She was 64.

In a press conference later in the day, the Biden Administration announced that they plan to distribute millions of free masks to “underserved and vulnerable” communities around the nation. The washable cloth masks are to be distributed via food banks and health centers.

“One of the most impactful things we can do is wear a mask,” Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Director, Dr. Rochelle Walensky assured, “and this is so important during this critical period when cases are declining but variants that spread more easily are increasing throughout our country.”

Bowser called for today to be an official Day of Remembrance for Lives Lost to Covid-19.
