Day 1: 100-Day Statehood Challenge
Did you know that the District of Columbia has more residents than 70 countries, however, our population of some 712,000 people do not have full voting representation in Congress?
We saw the implications of this — as if we are albatrossed to the whims of those who only work here — during the Wednesday, January 6th, 2021 attack on the United States Capitol building. The city’s mayor, Muriel Bowser requested federal reinforcements that did not arrive until hours later, and the tethering resounded, rightfully so, around the halls of Congress.
One of the District’s representatives, Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton (a non-voting delegate) added an additional four co-sponsors to the statehood bill, in the following days, reaching a total of 206 members petitioning to secure voting rights for locals.
